Even with the advances made in modern technology and the considerable expansion of the Global PSTN using transatlantic and global fibre optic networks, there is still a large requirement for applications over satellite within today's telecommunications industry. Especially in areas where the rapid conversion of traditional wired legacy networks to support high bandwidth circuits such as ADSL, ADSL2+ and SHDSL is moving quicker than projects to expand fibre networks.

There will always be a genuine need for satellite communications for some countries of the world, where it is extremely difficult or hard to support with anything other than a terrestrial wired or wireless network and do not have the luxury of a fibre optic network.
